All England: Have the rattling hand-fans permanently replaced the inflate clappers as cheering props for dinning | Badminton News

No badminton tournament was complete without the plastic clappers that came free with match tickets for badminton events and were left on the seat to create one right din. The origins are debated – some believed the inflated tubes that were clapped together for a drumming noise came from Koreans, others reckoned it was Japanese. They were inseparable from badminton though.
But the last few years have seen the clappers entirely replaced handfans that double up as rattlers. Spectators at the All England have been flapping the rattler fans that reger a clack-clack-clack cheer which don’t quite sound unlike actual clapping.
The paper hand-fans are heavier than the usual intricate flaps common to older east Asian and Victorian cultures, but can be used for the basic role of cooling faces off sweat beads. Most spectators used it like a rattle but there were a few who kept tapping them on opposite wrs.
