MP at top in atrocities on tribals: NCRB report

Bhopal: The state has earned a dubious distinction of staying at top in atrocities on tribals, going by the just-released National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report for 2016. Rajasthan and Odisha are second and third in this respect and have distinctly better record than MP, the state home to largest population of tribals in the country.
According to NCRB data for the year 2016 released on Thursday, Madhya Pradesh, which has a tribal population of 153.2 lakh accounted for 27.8% of crimes against the scheduled tribe (ST) population. As many as 1,823 cases of atrocities against STs were reported, up from 1,358 in 2015 and 1,577 in 2014.
Rajasthan, which is at the second spot in the list of states and union territories (UTs), recorded 1,195 cases, down from 1,409 cases in 2015 and 1,681 in 2015. Rajasthan has a tribal population of 92.4 lakh and accounts for 18.2% crimes against the tribal population.
Odisha stood third in this respect with 681 cases of atrocities against tribal population, which is marginally less than 691 in 2015. In the year before that, 535 cases were reported.
Tribal states like Tripura, Nagaland or union territory of Daman and Diu had no cases of atrocities against tribals nor in Delhi.
