‘Mighty heartbreak last night….can’t help but applaud the giants of modern day cricket’: Ravi Ashwin on India’s World Cup final loss to Australia | Cricket-world-cup News

Mohammed Siraj had tears in his eyes. KL Rahul sunk down on his knees. Rohit Sharma’s eyes looked red as he walked off the ground. Virat Kohli put his cap on to cover his face. Faces of the Indian players after the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia showed the cruel side of sport.
A team that won all nine of their league stage games before emerging victorious in the semifinal against New Zealand lost in the final match of the tournament, prolonging India’s wait for a first ICC title since 2013. Taking to Twitter, Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the first to sum up the emotions in the dressing room after the grueling loss against the six-time world champions.

“Mighty mighty heartbreak last night . Everyone in the team had several days to remember during this campaign and special mentions to Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, Rohit Sharma, and, Jasprit Bumrah. However I can’t help but applaud the giants of modern day cricket “Australia”. What they did on the field yesterday was just unbelievable . Congrats on their 6th World Cup win,” Ashwin wrote. Most Read

India batter Shreyas Iyer, who had back-to-back centuries under his belt, wrote, “We’re heartbroken, it still hasn’t sunk in and it won’t for a while. My first World Cup was an experience that has taught me so much and made me grateful for everything that’s come my way. Thank you to the BCCI, team management, support staff, my teammates and you the fans for backing us from the beginning right up until the end.  And congratulations to the entire Australian team on a marvelous campaign.”

Unfortunately yesterday was not our day. I would like to thank all Indians for supporting our team and me throughout the tournament. Thankful to PM @narendramodi for specially coming to the dressing room and raising our spirits. We will bounce back! pic.twitter.com/Aev27mzni5

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami also shared a photo with Prime Miner Narendra Modi from his visit of the Indian dressing room following the final. “Unfortunately yesterday was not our day. I would like to thank all Indians for supporting our team and me throughout the tournament. Thankful to PM Narendra Modi for specially coming to the dressing room and raising our spirits. We will bounce back!” wrote Shami, who was India’s leading wicket taker in the World Cup.

Having been put in to bat first Pat Cummins and Co, India were bundled out for 240. A target Australia managed to chase inside 43 overs with six wickets in hand.
It was India’s second defeat to Australia in an ODI World Cup final. Coincidentally, the men in blue had also won all of their games in the lead up to the final in 2003, which they lost to the Aussies.
