Mohammed Shami replaces Jasprit Bumrah in India’s T20 World Cup squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s T20 World Cup squad.
Bumrah had sustained a prolonged back injury during the recent India-South Africa series and had been removed from India’s 15-member squad. The 28-year-old had sustained the same injury during the India tour of England in July and had returned to playing only during the India-Australia T20I series before he complained of back pain after two appearances.

Mohammed Shami on the other hand, hasn’t featured in a T20I for India since last year’s World Cup in United Arab Emirates. The 32-year-old however, was a key feature in Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2022 winning campaign.
Further, the All India Selection Committee also named Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur among stands, replacing Shami as well as Deepak Chahar, who also sustained an injury during the India-South Africa ODI series.
While Shami has already joined the India squad down under, Siraj and Thakur will be travelling to Australia shortly.
India have been on the receiving end of injury troubles with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also having been ruled out after the injury he picked up during the 2022 Asia Cup.
The men in blue have already played two warm up matches in Perth against Western Australia XI and are scheduled to play Australia and New Zealand before their Super 12 match against Pakan on October 23 at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
