The founder of a makeup brand, the Indian designer recently took to Instagram to share a bunch of photos that documented and encapsulated her entire month. In one of the slides, the designer uploaded a photo of a small bowl of chilled rice water, which she captioned ‘name a better, more inexpensive toner for the face?!’.

Dr Mikki Singh, dermatolog and chief medical officer at Bodycraft Clinics, Gurgaon, said that it can be favourable in the summer, especially as it helps revitalise dull and tired skin that has been suffering from the harsh glare of the sun.

According to Asmita Dhekne Chebbi, venereology and leprosy dermatolog, cosmetolog, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, rice water is the starchy liquid obtained soaking or rinsing uncooked rice. Hailed Koreans and Japanese for its myriad skincare benefits, rice water boasts of a rich composition that includes vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and antioxidants, contributing to its acclaimed efficacy in beauty regimens.

What are the benefits of chilled rice water?
“This liquid can be used immediately or fermented for a few days, enriching it with additional nutrients and enhancing its benefits for hair and skin,” she added. Proponents claim that rice water is a powerhouse of nutrients, promoting a radiant complexion. “Its antioxidants and vitamins, including vitamin E and ferulic acid, help combat free radicals, slowing down the ageing process and minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, its soothing properties can calm irritated or inflamed skin conditions like eczema or sunburn,” said Dr Chebbi.

However, she warned of exercising caution while using this ingredient. “Some individuals with sensitive skin may experience irritation or allergic reactions, necessitating a patch test before widespread application.”
