Nawaz Sharif overthrew Benazir government on Osama bin Laden’s instruction: Former Sindh Minister

Nawaz Sharif, the former Pakistani Prime Minister who was recently ousted for his involvement in the Panama Papers scandal, is reported to have been engaged in yet another controversy. In an alarming revelation about the the overthrow of Benazir Bhutto’s government in 1996, the Information Minister of Pakistan’s Sindh province has accused Sharif of overthrowing Bhutto government on behest of slain Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden for money.
Sharjeel Inam Memon, a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader said that Sharif was ‘a product of dictators’. “What would he know of ideology?” Memon questioned. Referring to the recent National Accountability Bureau (NAB) charges filed against the Sharif family, the Sindh Minister alleged that the NAB has been prejudiced in its treatment to PML-N (Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz) and those leaders hailing from Sindh.

Memon was sent to ten-day NAB custody by an accountability court on October 24 in connection to a Rs 5.76 billion government advertisements graft scam.“NAB was not allowed access to Nawaz Sharif at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport but I was arrested from the runway,” he said. Memon also said that while Nawaz Sharif made money through Islamic republic unions, deceased Benazir Bhutto’s husband, Asif Ali Zardari remained imprisoned for 11 years. “Prison is the second home of a PPP worker,” he stated.
Responding to a question that entailed the heavy contingent of security forces deployed for Sharif family’s trip to the accountability court due to a large gathering of party workers, Memon said using state resources and VVIP protocol was wrong but added that it was the right of every worker to show support for their leader.
The former Sindh Minister who is being investigated for his alleged involvement in the graft scam is a close aide of former Pakistan President and PPP co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari. He was nominated in a reference made by NAB pertaining to alleged corruption in allocation of awareness advertisements of Sindh government in the electronic media.
