NBA: Golden State Warriors see drastic turn in performance, sit at tenth position in Western Conference | Basketball News
After the 2023-24 season that was designed to be forgotten for the Golden State Warriors, the shocking transfer of Klay Thompson seemed to have set them back another step. With doubts looming over how the team would eventually perform in the 2024-25 season after losing out on the playoffs in the previous season, Steph Curry and company’s first 15 games erased all those doubts.
The Warriors, also nicknamed the Dubs, started the season strong after winning 12 games and losing just three in their first fifteen. The fans felt that this could be a comeback, and the Warriors would potentially reach the playoffs for the 38th time in their 76 year hory. But things have drastically turned around as the Warriors now sit in the play-in spot at 10th after their loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers dropped their win percentage to 0.500.
After their dominant run in the first phase of the tournament, the Dub Nation’s run now looks like a 16-16, and in the 12 games they played in December, they have won only four. When their performance started to falter just in November, they still had the Points Per Game average (PPG) at 114.9, which is considered a great average in the league. This dropped down to 104.7 in December. To put into perspective, their recent opponent Cavaliers have a PPG average of over 122 in December.
While their PPG dropped, a point to note is also their defence that has seen a slight setback. Since November, the Warriors have a Steals per Game average of 8.3. This set them back further, after the backbone of the Warriors’ defence Draymond Green was seen to be missing in the middle of games, hinting that he may be nursing an injury. In the game against the LA Clippers, Green was not seen to be on court before the game was over. Though he made a comeback against the Phoenix Suns, a game that saw the Warriors win in overtime, their next game against the Cavs gave him another injury scare, as he left the court in the third quarter, visibly in pain.
For the last two months it has only been Steph Curry and Jonathan Kuminga who have performed consently with 518 and 446 points respectively.
This does not shed positive light on the Warriors who are already limping towards a playoff finish. They play their next game against Philadelphia 76ers on third, and will be hoping for yet another turnaround, this time for the better.
