Neeraj Chopra will be competing in India for the first time since March 2021, ending a wait for more than years to throw competitively on home soil. He will be part of the men’s javelin throw event at the National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
Neeraj’s last event in India was also the Federation Cup, when he regered 87.80m in March 2021, a few months before going on to become the Olympic gold medall in Tokyo, creating hory for Indian sport as the first track and field champion at the Summer Games. Since then, Neeraj has largely competed at Diamond League meets and global events overseas.
Neeraj began his season at Doha Diamond League last week, where he finished second with his final throw of 88.38m. Neeraj reached Odisha on Tuesday evening, and it remains to be seen how hard he will go as this event has been added to his calendar late in the piece.

Also competing at the Federation Cup is Asian Games silver-winner Jena. He had a disappointing Diamond League debut, finishing ninth with a throw of 76.31m, and will be looking to bounce back at his home event.
The event will be crucial for DP Manu, on the comeback trail. He had finished sixth in the 2023 World Championships, and will be looking to qualify for the upcoming Paris Olympics breaching the 85.50m mark, will also compete directly in the finals.
“All those who have crossed 75m will not compete in the qualifying round on Tuesday. There are nine of them from among those who had made entries, including Neeraj and Jena. They will directly compete in the final on Wednesday,” Indian athletics head coach Radhakrishnan Nair told PTI.
