The development comes against the backdrop of ‘Gen Z’ protests in the neighbouring country taking a violent turn. An official from India’s Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) stationed at the checkpost said, “The curbs are not from our side. We allowed people to cross until yesterday, but many were turned back at the Nepal checkpost. We received information about a jailbreak in Birgunj, and the situation has been tense overall. Because of these developments, the Nepal authorities requested that we stop people from crossing.”
Limping back to normalcy: The Supreme Court of Nepal and banks in Kathmandu will reopen in phases after suffering heavy damage during Gen Z-led protests that left 34 dead. Additionally, curfew relaxations allowed markets to reopen briefly, though public transport remains suspended as the army enforces fresh restrictions.Around 54 inmates who escaped from Bharatpur Jail in Chitwan have returned voluntarily. Chief of Chitwan Drict Jail Ravindra Dhungana said the escapees have begun to surrender gradually, many after receiving phone calls urging them to return. “The atmosphere on Wednesday was different. Protesters want Sushila Karki as interim PM: Efforts to form an interim government in Nepal remain mired in uncertainty as President Ram Chandra Poudel insed that any solution to the crisis must be found within the framework of the exing Constitution. His remarks directly contradict Nepal Army chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel, who persuaded Sushila Karki to accept the post of interim Chief Executive with backing from some Gen Z protest groups. However, Nepal’s Constitution bars retired justices from holding political or constitutional office, raising fresh hurdles. Poudel’s stance has gained support from major parties including the Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), Mao Centre and Madesh-based groups, signalling a return of the issue to Parliament where Oli’s alliance still holds a majority. The Gen Z movement remains divided, lacking formal leadership, while Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah has openly supported dissolving Parliament and backing Karki’s interim leadership, deepening political polarisation.
