‘No one came for Andaz Apna Apna premiere 30 years ago too’: Producer’s children reveal why Aamir, Salman, Raveena, Karisma didn’t promote re-release in person | Bollywood News

The three children of late Andaz Apna Apna producer Vinay Sinha opened up about the film’s re-release, and revealed why none of the stars participated in on-ground promotions. In an interview, they said that it was Salman Khan’s idea to take the re-release route instead of producing a sequel, but that nobody has been able to devote time to promoting it, beyond posting assets on social media. Director Rajkumar Santoshi, who didn’t attend the premiere back in 1994 as well, hasn’t even shared a video te that can be used to promote the re-release, the producer’s children told Lehren Retro.
Asked about Santoshi’s involvement in the film’s re-issue, they said, “There have been no communications in the last six months. He became very busy with Lahore 1947. In fact, he gave us no time at all. He’s busy with the film, apparently it’s being heavily reshot. He didn’t come forward on the promotional aspect. I messaged him again today, asking for a video te, and I’m still waiting for a reply.” Revealing further back-and-forth between them and Aamir, they said that Aamir’s team reached out to them for a recent retrospective on his career. They said that Aamir seemed to understand their reluctance in participating, because they were planning their own re-release. Despite that, they allowed Andaz Apna Apna to be screened twice.

They continued, “During Andaz Apna Apna release also, there was nobody for the premiere. None of them came. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan were shooting, they were busy. Raj ji didn’t come. Only Meenakshi Seshadri came. Raveena and Karisma were also not there. When they were initially signed, they were still in the nascent stage of their careers. But in the four years that it took to make the film, they became huge stars. They signed a lot of films. Dad didn’t want to wait any longer, and he just decided to release the film.”
Released three decades ago, Andaz Apna Apna didn’t perform very well in theatres, but became a massive cult hit over the years thanks to re-runs on television. In recent years, there have been talks of a sequel, and the producer’s children said that the decision ultimately rests with them, despite what Santoshi and Aamir have been saying in the press. Asked if they own a stake in the film, they said, “Aamir was never a producer (of the film), he was just an actor. We will never sell the rights to him or Rajkumar Santoshi.”
Priti Sinha said that it was Paresh Rawal’s idea to restrict promotions to social media, as he felt that people already know everything there is to know about the movie. There was also the trouble of getting Raveena Tandon to chip in, as she and Priti had a falling out in 2003. She said, “I haven’t reached out to Raveena to promote the film, but I will definitely ask her to come to the premiere. The reasons behind our fallout were personal; we were best friends growing up. I wish her the best, and I’m sure she’ll come through if I ask her. But I haven’t asked her. It’s as much their film as it is our father’s. They should help promote it themselves.”
Raveena and Karisma Kapoor didn’t see eye to eye during the film’s production, which lasted four years. Eventually, Salman pushed everyone to complete the film, as the delays had gotten out of hand. In a recent interview, Aamir said that he was too shaken up the Pahalgam terror attack to attend the film’s re-release premiere.
