‘Nobody can compete with us’: Trump says confident of ‘very good deal’ with China | World News

US President Donald Trump Thursday expressed confidence that Washington will secure a favourable trade deal with China, despite ongoing tensions and escalating tariffs. In response to questions about US allies getting closer to China, Trump dismissed concerns, stating, “No. Nobody can compete with us,” and reaffirmed, “I think we are going to make a very good deal with China.”
While speaking with Italian Prime Miner Giorgia Meloni, Trump also downplayed the urgency of finalising trade agreements, pointing the revenue generated his tariffs. He noted that he was “in no rush” to settle the issue but expressed optimism about a relatively easy deal with the European Union.

China has indicated that it is engaged in “working-level communication” with the US to resolve their trade dispute, but it placed the onus on Washington to lead the resolution. A Chinese commerce minry spokesperson, He Yongqian, responded to Trump’s statement that “the ball is in China’s court” quoting a proverb: “The person who tied the bell must be the one to untie it,” suggesting the US should take responsibility for ending the standoff.
Earlier in the day, Trump mentioned his productive discussions with other nations, including Mexico and Japan, and noted that China was open to negotiations. “Every nation, including China, wants to meet!” he said.

However, tensions remain high, with China warning the US to “stop threatening and blackmailing.” Chinese Foreign Minry spokesperson Lin Jian said that China is committed to resolving the issue through dialogue but will not be coerced. “If the US really wants to resolve the issue, it should stop exerting extreme pressure and talk to China on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” Lin said. He further reiterated China’s stance that “there is no winner in a tariff war” but stressed that China is not afraid to continue the fight.
Despite the trade war’s impact, with tariffs reaching up to 245 percent on many Chinese imports, Trump continues to push for a deal on US terms, while China retaliates with its own levies on US goods.
