‘Nothing happens’: Brazil legend Roberto Carlos recalls racism in La Liga during Real Madrid vs Barcelona

Roberto Carlos, the legendary former Brazilian footballer who played as a left back, is widely regarded as one of the greatest left backs of all time.
Carlos played for several clubs throughout his career, including Real Madrid. He also won 127 caps for the Brazilian national team, scoring 11 goals.
Carlos has spoken out about racism in Spanish football on several occasions.
In 1997, he was racially abused Barcelona fans during a match at the Camp Nou. Carlos said that he felt “like an animal” and “ashamed” to be playing in Spain at the time.
On Tuesday, Carlos, was one of several footballers who spoke out against racism in the wake of the incident against Vinicius Jr.
“This problem has been going on for many years, friends, let’s not fool ourselves and nothing happens,” he wrote in a tweet which also had a video of the incident.

Vinícius Júnior was subjected to rac abuse yet again on Sunday with the Brazil star saying the Spanish league “now belongs to racs.”
The latest abuse against Vinícius came in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss at Valencia, a match that had to be temporarily stopped after the Brazil forward said he was insulted a fan behind one of the goals at Mestalla Stadium.
“It wasn’t the first time, or the second or the third. Racism is normal in LaLiga. The competition thinks it’s normal, as does the federation, and the opponents encourage it,” Vinícius said on Instagram and Twitter. “The league that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Criano (Ronaldo) and (Lionel) Messi now belongs to racs … But I’m strong and I will fight until the end against the racs. Even if far from here.”
The 22-year-old Vinícius, who is is Black, has been subjected to rac abuse since moving to Spain five years ago.
