(AP Photo)New York Mayor Election 2025 Live Updates: Tuesday marks the D-day for New York City residents as it’ll be the first major Election Day since President Donald Trump returned to the White House for his second tenure, and his leadership policies have dominated almost all the debates in the course of NYC mayoral race. The biggest contest is between Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani and independent candidate and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, alongside Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. The frontrunner in almost all the polls in the NYC race, Mamdani, a self-described democratic social, has already been a target of Trump’s criticism.
Referendum on Trump: On the eve of New York City mayoral polls, President Trump announced on Truth Social that he is backing independent candidate Cuomo, who lost Democratic primary to Mamdani in June this year. Trump said a vote for Republican nominee Sliwa would be a vote for Mamdani. “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him,” Trump said. The US president’s policies, including tariffs, his “big, beautiful” budget bill threatened rural hospitals and health insurance coverage for millions and the recent federal shutdown could play a factor in the polls.Story continues below this ad
Mamdani- A new star for Democrats in NYC: Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Muslim state legislator, has backed radical changes in order to address economic inequality. Mamdani’s approach of having a bold agenda and an inspirational approach has brought in thousands of supporters in New York in his camp, and the NYC mayor frontrunner has also received endorsements from likes of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to campaign on his behalf.
