Odisha chief miner Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced a reward of Rs 25 lakh for javelin star, Kishore Jena, who became the first from the state to represent India at the finals of the World Athletics Championship in Budapest. Patnaik said Kishore’s remarkable journey and exceptional performance at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest have not only brought glory to the state and nation but will also inspire many athletes for years to come.
Son of a farmer and a native of Kothasahi in Puri drict, the 27-year old was unsure about his participation in the showpiece event as his Visa was delayed. The process was expedited after Olympics gold medal Neeraj Chopra, who also clinched gold in the World Athletics Championship, flagged the issue.
Jena, a product of Government Sports Hostel in Bhubaneswar took up Javelin in 2015 after switching from volleyball on the suggestion of his coach. Before he participated in the World Athletics Championship, he was practicing at the Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar.
