Oldest IPL captains l: The IPL has witnessed a host of cricket legends play their part in the success of the tournament over the course of 18 editions. It all dates back to 2008 when a legendary Shane Warne inspired an underdog Rajasthan Royals to the inaugural IPL title, a year after his international retirement.
Warne continued to lead the Royals for close to three years, marking his final appearance as captain in IPL 2011, finishing as the then-oldest captain in the IPL at 41 years and 249 days. Warne’s record stood for nearly 12 years until MS Dhoni transformed from a young maverick in the IPL to its most successful skipper and seasoned campaigner in 2023. Dhoni surpassed Warne as the oldest IPL captain and led CSK to their fifth title, beating Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023 final. Though he fell for a golden duck, Dhoni’s final appearance as CSK skipper came at the staggering age of 41 years and 325 days.
Interestingly, Dhoni could make a one-off appearance as the Chennai Super Kings after a year’s interval in the IPL 2025 season after reports suggested that regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad could miss out on a clash againt Delhi Capitals on April 5, 2025 due to an injury.
