Olympic quotas up for grabs in certain events, it would be more than winning medals for some athletes at the Asian Games | Asian-games News

A vast majority of the 600-plus strong Indian contingent heading to Hangzhou for the 19th Asian Games will have their eyes on medals. But, beyond that, there will be a few athletes with a bigger picture in mind. Of not just triumph in China, but earning a pathway to France. In a few major Olympics disciplines, there are Paris 2024 quotas available.
Events that have direct quota spots are archery (recurve), boxing, hockey, tennis, artic swimming, breaking, modern pentathlon, sailing, and water polo. Athletics too will see sportspersons qualify for Paris if they can meet the specific standards set out the governing body.
Here’s a look at what is at stake for Indian athletes in some of the major Olympic disciplines. (There are no representatives from India in water polo, breaking and artic swimming).
Recurve Archery
While Korea will expectedly dominate all of the recurve disciplines, India will hope they can get the luck of the draw and reach the backend of the individual events to stand a chance. While Korean men have achieved their maximum quota spots through the team event, women missed out at the Worlds and will be favourites in Hangzhou, making it a bit more difficult for the others.

Overall, the mixed team champions at the Asian Games and the two top NOCs without quota already won in the individual events will earn their tickets.
Quota spots available: Men individual (2), Women individual (2), Mixed team (1)
Boxing
All 13 weight categories in boxing will have quota spots available, but the numbers are different. India have representation in all categories. All of he men’s and most of women’s events have uniformly two spots to Paris available (which will go to the finals). The 50kg (with Nikhat Zareen), 54kg, 57kg and 60kg divisions for women will have four spots each, meaning reaching the semifinals will be sufficient.
Men’s divisions and quota spots: 51kg (2), 57kg (2), 63.5kg (2), 71, 80kg (2), 92kg (2), +92kg (2)
Women’s divisions and quota spots: 50kg (4), 54kg (4), 57kg (4), 60kg (4), 66kg (2), 75kg (2)

The hockey teams will hope to put the ghosts of 2018 behind as they look to seal their spots for Paris in the first possible go. Both men and women had to go through the scenic route last time around, having finished with bronze and silver respectively. The gold medal in Hangzhou, for which both teams should be favourites (of varying degrees perhaps), will earn their ticket to France.
Men’s: 1 quota spot
Women’s: 1 quota spot
Athletics
Any athlete who meets the qualification standards in Hangzhou, as laid out World Athletics, will confirm their qualification for Paris.
Tennis
Asian Games singles title winners (men and women, 1 each) will qualify for an ITF Place provided his/her ranking is within the top 400 on the Singles Rankings and provided the quota for the athlete’s NOC has not already been filled via Direct Acceptance.
