Painful to see the West Indies not playing in the World Cup: Kapil Dev | Cricket News
Former Indian captain Kapil Dev, who won the World Cup against the West Indies in 1983 said it is painful to watch the Caribbean not participating in the upcoming 2023 50-over World Cup.
“It is painful to see the West Indies not playing in the World Cup. It is tough to imagine an ODI tournament without them. They have produced such great players. I don’t know what is hurting them now but, hopefully, they will make a comeback,” Kapil Dev said according to TOI.
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Miner Keith Rowley earlier echoed similar sentiments. “Today I saw the worst cricket match ever played a West Indies team,” Rowley wrote on his Facebook page after West Indies lost to Netherlands in the World Cup qualifiers. Shai Hope-lead West Indies looked nothing like their former self in the qualifying tournament held in Zimbabwe.
“This amateurish demoralising embarrassment has to stop. Playing for the West Indies requires a desire to fight, to believe, to win. To saunter through to defeat is unacceptable,” he added.
This is the first time in the hory of the tournament the West Indies won’t be part of the prestigious competition. They won the tournament twice in 1975 and 1979 and were favourites to win in 1983 as well. It is the second successive ICC tournament after the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, where they won’t feature in the main event now.
The Netherlands who have beaten West Indies in the qualifiers along with Sri Lanka will participate in the showpiece event.
