She said, “My family told me that they would fight till the end. Annu bhai said he’d take him to the Supreme Court. My bhabhi said that she would sell her jewellery; my other brother was willing to sell off our property. These things aren’t easy; they last 25 years sometimes. But after he made his accusations, I told my mother that I don’t want to fight. All I’ll get if I win is property, I wouldn’t get him back. My family wasn’t in favour of this decision; one lawyer promised me that he’d have Om sahab jailed, all I had to do was accuse him of hitting me. But that man never raised a hand on me.”
She admitted that she accepted an alimony of Rs 6 lakh, and explained why. “My parents had taken out a lot of loans for our wedding. Puri sahab had bought some land, which hadn’t been paid off entirely. I wasn’t going to accept any alimony, but bhai reminded me that mom owed a lot of money. Secondly, I remember very well that Annu bhaiya had borrowed Rs 5,000 from Yash Chopra to pay my lawyer. He was broke. He returned that money, of course. But to put them in further debt at this time didn’t sound right to me.”
Seema said that she put her self-respect aside and accepted the alimony. But she turned down a house that she could’ve taken as well. She also refused to accept the Rs 25,000 that he sent her via his secretary when she lost their child.
