Petrol, diesel prices fall for 6th successive day today

New Delhi: Following today’s rate revision, petrol and diesel prices were lowered by 16-17 paise a litre and 21-23 paise respectively across major cities of the country for the sixth successive day on Tuesday (January 21). In Delhi, petrol prices dropped to Rs 74.82 (16 paise decrease) a litre as against Rs 74.98 on Monday while diesel price declined to Rs 68.05 per litre as compared to Rs 68.26 a litre on Monday, as per data from Indian Oil Corporation website.

Worth mentioning here is that local prices of fuel are the cheapest in Delhi among all metros and most state capitals due to lower taxes. On Monday, state-run oil marketing companies reduced the pump price of petrol and diesel by 10-12 paise and 19-20 paise per litre respectively across the country.

People in Mumbai have to pay Rs 80.42 for a litre of petrol after a 16 paise drop over Monday’s rate. A litre of diesel costs Rs 71.35, 22 paise less than yesterday’s price of Rs 71.57 a litre. In Chennai, the retail price of petrol price was lowered by 17 paise to Rs 77.72 a litre, from Rs 77.89 recorded on Monday. Diesel costs Rs 71.90 a litre, 23 paise less than Monday’s price.

Similarly, in Kolkata, petrol is retailing at Rs 77.42 a litre, 16 paise less than yesterday’s rate of Rs 77.58 while diesel price fell to Rs 70.41 a litre, 21 paise less than yesterday’s price of Rs 70.62 a litre. In Gurugram, petrol is retailing at Rs 74.31 a litre, cut by 12 paise from Rs 74.43 a litre on Monday. Diesel price in Gurugram fell from Rs 67.20 a litre on Monday to Rs 67.02 on Monday. The price of petrol in Noida declined by 13 paise to Rs 76.10 a litre while diesel was selling at Rs 68.32 a litre as against Rs 68.53 a litre yesterday.

On Tuesday, in the international oil market, crude prices declined after a force majeure declared by Libya after armed forces closed two major pipelines. International Brent crude oil futures were trading at USD 64.90 per barrel, down 30 cents, or 0.5 per cent, from their last close. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped by 14 cents to USD 58.40 per barrel.
