‘Player of the Match’ in Ranji Trophy to get medals | Cricket News

In the current Ranji Trophy season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will honour the ‘Player of the match’ with medals.
Till last season, the Player of the Match used to get Rs 25,000/ from the sponsors. This year, the BCCI has decided to award them a medal. However, there is no clarity on whether the cash award will remain the same.
In a circular sent to all match referees and state associations, accessed The Indian Express, the board states, ‘This is to inform you that the BCCI has dispatched ‘Player of the Match’ medals to all the host associations of the Ranji Trophy matches for both Elite and Plate groups. You are requested to hand over the medal (one per match) to the match referee on his/her arrival.”
The decision comes after the BCCI felt that a player should cherish the memento earned for his hard work. Till now, players used to get medals or awards for international games or IPL only, but the BCCI thought that they should also provide medals so that it can be in the players’ possession for posterity.
“In other sports, athletes have something to show when it comes to rewards but domestic cricketers were deprived of this. So it was decided to give medals along with prize money rewards after each game. Domestic players will have something to take back home,” a BCCI official said.
