Prime Miner Narendra Modi wished Mohammad Shami a speedy recovery after the Indian seamer announced that he had undergone an heel surgery on Monday night.
“Wishing you a speedy recovery and good health. I’m confident you’ll overcome this injury with the courage that is so integral to you,” Prime Miner Narendra Modi wrote on X.
In a reply post for the PM on X, Shami wrote, “It was such a wonderful surprise to receive a personal note from Prime Miner Narendra Modi sir wishing me a speedy recovery. His kindness and thoughtfulness truly mean a lot to me. Thank you so much Modi sir, for your well wishes and support during this time. I will continue to work hard towards my recovery,Thank you all for your continued wish, love and support.”
The 33-year-old Shami said that completed a right Achilles tendon surgery in London on Monday. Shami, the bowling spearhead of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, is likely to miss the upcoming season owing to recovery. His availability will also be doubtful for team India in their build-up to the T20 World Cup, set to begin in June in the West Indies and USA.

Shami has not featured in a competitive game since India’s ODI World Cup final defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad in November 2023. The wily seamer emerged as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps from seven matches at an average of 10.70. In the semifinal game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Shami ripped through the New Zealand lineup with figures of seven for 57 – the best ODI figures ever an Indian bowler.
Shami reportedly played the tournament carrying the injury, receiving injections to hold his ankle in shape ahead of matches. Shami was initially called up to India’s Test squad for the South Africa tour in late December but was later pulled out of the series.
In his absence, India have handed Test caps to Mukesh Kumar (against South Africa) and Akash Deep (against England). Shami’s last red-ball outing was the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at the Oval in June 2023.
