Pope Francis passes away at 88, confirms Vatican | World News

Pope Francis died at the age of 88 in Rome, the Vatican confirmed in a video statement on Monday. The first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, he was elected as the supreme pontiff of on March 13, 2013.
The pontiff was admitted at the Gemelli Hospital for a week with pneumonia in both lungs and a complex lung infection, the Vatican had said in a statement. In addition to “high flows” of oxygen, he was also receiving blood transfusions after tests showed low platelet counts associated with anemia.
Pope Francis was the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday, ending an often turbulent reign marked division and tension as he sought to overhaul the hidebound institution.
He was 88, and had suffered various ailments in his 12 year papacy.
