Putin discusses US-Iran nuclear talks with leader of Oman | World News

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks on Tuesday with the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, to discuss Iran’s nuclear programme and efforts to reach a deal involving the United States.
Oman has been playing a quiet role in trying to bring the US and Iran to an agreement that would limit Tehran’s nuclear activities. The US, under President Donald Trump, has pushed for such a deal, fearing that Iran may be working towards building a nuclear weapon something Tehran strongly denies.
“We discussed the progress of negotiations between Iranian and American representatives,” Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yury Ushakov was quoted as saying Interfax, according to Reuters. “We will see what the result will be. We maintain close contact with our Iranian colleagues. Where we can, we help.”

Trump has previously warned he might take military action against Iran if a deal isn’t made. At the same time, Russia, which signed a strategic partnership treaty with Iran earlier this year, is also looking to improve ties with the US.
Russia remains involved in the talks as it was part of the original 2015 nuclear deal that Trump withdrew from in 2018. Moscow has also said that any US military strike on Iran would be unlawful.
During the meeting, Putin told the sultan that Russian energy firms were interested in working with Oman, according to televised remarks shown Russian state media.
This meeting marked Putin’s second face-to-face with a Middle Eastern leader in under a week — he had met Qatar’s emir on 17 April, and Iran’s foreign miner had also visited Moscow recently.
