QUICK COMMENT| It’s Thomas Tuchel: In a first, England name German football manager | Football News
A German coach in charge of the English national team. The chances of an English fan hearing these words would almost seem impossible even 2-3 years ago. But late on Tuesday, The Sunday Times reported that Thomas Tuchel would become England’s first-ever German manager. Since Italian Fabio Capello left the job in 2012, the England Football Association seemed adamant to give the job to any Englishman available. That’s when we saw the job being passed around from one Englishman to another with Stuart Pearce, Roy Hodgson and Sam Allardyce each having a go at it.
After those frankly tumultuous years, Gareth Southgate would take the reins and help England reach the 2018 World Cup semifinals, the Euro 2020 final, the 2022 World Cup quarterfinal and the 2024 Euro final. But the silverware was missing which coupled with his orthodox playing style, led to a barrage of vitriol against him which ultimately forced him to resign.
The pressure of the England job is something not everyone can cope with but Tuchel is not just any ordinary manager. He won the Champions League in 2021 with Chelsea in another high-pressure job, beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final.

A tactical master who often deploys the 4-2-3-1 formation while playing in a high pressing style, Tuchel’s football is a take no prisoners approach, which is poles apart from the safe style Southgate preferred. With the German opting for an agile ball playing central defensive midfielder, Jude Bellingham may have to play deeper alongside Declan Rice. Under his system, Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon will marshal both wings while Cole Palmer will play through the middle with Harry Kane as the central striker.
Under Tuchel, England will have a manager who can realically lead them to silverware instead of just sniffing around it.
