R Ashwin is one of the greatest match winner for India: Paras Mhambrey

Team India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey says R Ashwin is probably one of the greatest match winner India has ever produced. The veteran off-spinner, who was dropped from the World Test Championship (WTC) final bagged 12 wickets against West Indies at Dominica and helped India win the match an innings and 141 runs.
“As a team we realise how valuable R Ashwin is. In my opinion he is one the greatest match winner for India. There have been very few match-winners like him. The number of matches he has helped us win what can I say,”Mhambrey told reporters.
Mhambrey says that the he alongside other coaching staffs checked the stats of the local games and it is where they realised that as the game will progress the spinners will call the shots.

“When we came here on Day 1, it was a bit dry and when we checked the stats of the local games we found out that spinners dominated in those games. We felt as the game progresses it will be difficult for batting and the other thing is how we use the wicket. They have batted and we have batted as well and there were situations where teams could have batted for longer periods which we did. That created the base for the bowlers to later come and perform. The way Ashwin and Jadeja came on later and bowled is praiseworthy,” he said.
On the clinical performance the bowling coach said both the batters and the bowlers executed their plans to perfection.
“Ideal start for a Test match, you want to carry the performance from the last Test match or Test series. Honestly, if you ask me I did not think it would be that easy. Yes, looking at the wicket the wicket was difficult and started to turn more as the day progressed it was dry early on but the way we applied batting and bowling was extremely happy to see that,” he said.
The bowling coach also lauded opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s knock and call his knock “fabulous”. Yashasvi Jaiswal looked all set to get to a double hundred on Test debut, such was his application and control on a pitch that was not a featherbed any means. Neither pace nor spin fazed him, and one felt it would be only a batting error or loss of patience that could prove to be his downfall. The youngster making his Test debut scored 171 and helped India win the match an innings and 141 runs.
“The way he has batted is fabulous. I thought for a debutant to come in and not on an easy wicket obviously it was a slow wicket it got slower as the game progressed the stroke-making wasn’t easy. If you look at his batting earlier he is the kind of guy who likes to take on the game but the way he applied himself on that wicket is very good to see,” Mhambrey said.
“That is what is needed at the international level you must be able to adapt to different conditions and positions and most importantly that was expected the team and he did the role for the team which is definitely very heartening to see. The performance he gave here will give him a lot of confidence going ahead.”
With match ended inside three days, the bowling coach said the result has given a lot of positives for the team.
“A win like this will make a difference especially when you finish a game in three days you take a lot of positives like the way we batted and the spinners bowled on a surface which was turning,” he said.

With West Indies cricket hitting another low, there has been a lot of talks about what is the point of having this series against a struggling team. However, the bowling coach said team doesn’t care about the outside noise and they know the importance of playing international cricket.
“When we came on this tour we knew we were playing international cricket which is the highest level of cricket. I don’t think we don’t no individual or team need more motivation than that. We were clear about our approach and the way we wanted to go about the Test series, T20 series and ODI series. What people say on the outside is irrelevant what is important is our thought process we execute our plans and rest,” he said.
