R Madhavan quit films after Swiss farmer gave him a disgusted look, realised he was ‘dancing to other’s tunes’: ‘I grew a beard, travelled across India’ | Bollywood News

Actor R Madhavan spoke about taking a break from acting after becoming disillusioned the profession. He recalled an anecdote involving a Swiss farmer, who gave him a look of utter disdain on an outdoor shoot. Madhavan spiralled into an exential crisis after being triggered this incident, and decided to explore the country with boots on the ground. In an interview with India TV, Madhavan said that he wasn’t connecting to the projects that he was doing, and was simply following the advise of people who told him that he needs to appeal to audiences in tier 2 and 3 cities.
He said, “I had to take a break because I was very disillusioned the kind of work I was doing. I was shooting a Tamil song in Switzerland, wearing orange pants and a green shirt. I was gyrating to the music. I was in the middle of the road, and I saw this Swiss farmer looking at us with complete disdain and shaking his head. I looked at him and said, ‘You come to Chennai, I’ll show you who I am’. I was really offended, but it struck me suddenly that I am literally dancing to other people’s tunes.”

Madhavan reminded himself that he is a multi-talented person, and that he should be doing more in his life. “I do so many things, none of which I’m showing in my movies. The only thing I was trying to do was woo the audiences in the B and C centres. I realised my make, because under no microscope do I look like I’m short of a dollar or uneducated.”
Madhavan decided to take a break, and during this time, travelled across the country. “My wife looked at me one morning and said, ‘You’re going to work like you want to come back from it’. I said yes. So, I took a break. I wanted to understand where the country is going, what are the kind of things that people are appreciating. I stopped acting. I stopped doing even ad films. I grew a beard. I travelled across India and understood what really matters, how the rickshaw guys are talking. And that insight of four years is probably what I’m eating off right now.”
Madhavan will soon be seen in the film Test, also starring Siddharth and due out on Netflix on Friday. He was last seen in the ZEE5 film Hisaab Barabar. After Test, he’ll appear in the sequel to Shaitaan, and Kesari: Chapter 2, alongside Akshay Kumar and Ananya Panday.
