Tsunami alert issued for Pacific islands, Japan after 8.7 magnitude earthquake hits near Russia’s Kamchatka | World News

Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula witnessed a powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, which has triggered tsunami warnings from Japan and the US Tsunami Warning Center.
Russia’s regional governor, citing preliminary information, has said that there has been no injuries as a result of the 8.7 magnitude earthquake, but kindergarten has been damaged, Reuters reported. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake was shallow at a depth of 19.3 kilometers. “Today’s earthquake was serious and the strongest in decades of tremors,” Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said.

A tsunami alert has been issued after the 8.7 magnitude earthquake for Pacific islands, Russia and Japan the USGS. A tsunami threat was reported in the Northern Mariana islands of Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan, the alert issued the USGS stated.
According to Japan’s weather agency, a tsunami of 1 metre is expected to reach large coastal areas starting around 1am GMT. The US Tsunami Warning System also issued a warning of “hazardous tsunami waves” in the next three hours along some coasts of Russia and Japan.
The USGS confirmed a tsunami and issued a tsunami warning for parts of Alaska. The tsunami warning remains in effect for the Samalga Pass near the state’s Aleutian Islands.
