Ravichandran Ashwin reveals what makes Rohit Sharma stand out as a captain | Cricket News

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed what traits makes Indian skipper Rohit Sharma stand out as a captain. Ashwin was recently part of the Indian cricket team, which was led Rohit, that lost the World Cup final to Australia earlier this month.
Rohit was the leader of the side and opened the innings, often giving the Indian cricket team blering starts in the first powerplay overs. But his captaincy was also praised during the tournament.
Now, Ashwin has said what he believes makes Ashwin stand out.
“If you take a look at Indian cricket, everybody will be telling you that MS Dhoni is the best captain. Rohit Sharma is an outstanding person. He understands every single player in the team. He knows the likes and dislikes of each of us and has a great understanding. He puts in the effort to know each player personally,” Ashwin told former India cricketer S Badrinath on the latter’s YouTube channel.

Ashwin got to play just the one game at the World Cup, with the Indian team think tank preferring Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav when they needed spin.
“As far as I playing the final is concerned, the team combination and all is secondary. Firstly, it’s about empathy – I keep stressing it a lot. It’s like standing in someone else’s shoes and looking at things from their perspective. Had I been in Rohit’s shoes, I would have thought 100 times about altering the combination. It was going alright for the team, so why rest a fast bowler for three spinners?” Ashwin said.
Ashwin also reflected on the pain the Indian players felt in the dressing room about missing out on the World Cup trophy, which would have been India’s third after the ones won Kapil Dev’s men in 1983 and MS Dhoni’s side in 2011. After an imperious march to the final, Team India lost to Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
“We felt the pain. Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli) were crying. Seeing that, it felt bad. Anyway, it was not meant to be. This team was an experienced one. Everybody knew what to do. And then, it was professional. Everybody knew their routines and warm-ups,” he said.
