‘Reverse ramping on Day 1…confrontation with Virat were the two catalysts that shot him up 200k’ Beau Webster on Sam Konstas’ spike in Instagram followers | Cricket News
Australia handed the debut caps to Sam Konstas and Beau Webster at MCG and SCG respectively. However, the latter did acknowledge that he did not have a spike in Instagram followers as the teenager Konstas did.
“Certainly don’t have 200,000. I think the reverse ramping on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test and the confrontation with Virat were the two catalysts that shot him up 200k. But no, the Instagram following certainly increased but not to that scale. He’s an overnight sensation,” speculated 31-year-old Webster on Willow Talk on why there was a spike in followers for Konstas.
Konstas did spring in a surprise when he decided to scoop Jaspirt Bumrah on Day 1 of the MCG Test. Bumrah till the point was the best bowler in the series. Konstas’ approach ensured that Bumrah missed his accuracy in his first spell. The innings got under the skin of the Indian players and Virat Kohli in that game went onto shoulder barge young Konstas for which Kohli later was fined ICC.
Webster’s fairytale
Unlike Konstas’ debut Webster who plyed his trade in Australian domestic cricket and churned out runs and picked wickets consently season after season has had a more subdued but effective debut at Sydney. In the first innings, he scored a half-century coming in a tricky situation to bat. In the second innings he got the wicket of Shubman Gill when the Indian batter was looking to change gears and scored Webster scored a 39* to see Australia home and regain the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
“It was like a fairytale. We needed 8 to win and I managed to backfoot punch for a four then there were two balls left and I thought I don’t think I am ever going to get another chance here to win a game with a boundary for the country in a fifth and deciding Test, so I run down the wicket, initially I was trying to hit it for a six and it actually dropped a little bit on me shorter but still managed to get a good piece of it through mid-off,” Webster said.
