‘Surprised’ Liam Lawson hoping to win back Red Bull seat after demotion | Sport-others News

After crashing out of the Australian Grand Prix and a disappointing show in China, Liam Lawson was demoted to the Racing Bulls Red Bull ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda took his spot as the second driver behind Max Verstappen.
Lawson admitted that the demotion came as a “surprise” and that he was informed about it over a phone call on “Monday or Tuesday”, just after the Chinese GP.
“It was more of a done deal,” he said.
He said there was a possibility of him earning back his spot, but sounded grim about the possibility.

“Yeah, I guess that’s part of the conversation,” he told journals in Suzuka. “In a way — that’s great, but I was already there.”
“Whatever happens down the line is more or less out of my control,” Lawson shrugged. “What I can control is the driving stuff — and to prove that. Where the future is at this point, I don’t think about it too much.”
Lawson said that one of the reasons behind his failure at the start of the season was that he wasn’t familiar with the circuits. And he rued the fact that the demotion had come before he could show off what he can do at Suzuka.
“I was more surprised” about the sudden demotion,” he said. “It’s very early in the season and I would say I was hoping to go to a track that I’d raced before and have a chance. For Yuki (who hails from Japan and is familiar with the Suzuka track), obviously it’s a great opportunity and on a track that he’s done a lot. He’ll — I’m sure — probably be more comfortable,” Lawson said.
