Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger got engaged to former ballerina Melanie Hamrick after years of dating — and no one had a clue until Hamrick herself revealed it in a Paris Match interview. “We’ve been engaged two or three years,” said the 37-year-old. The 81-year-old British rock icon began dating his now-fiancée back in 2014, after they first met in Japan. During the interview, Hamrick also touched on wedding plans, though it doesn’t sound like the wedding bells are calling anytime soon. “Maybe one day we’ll marry, maybe not. We’re so happy in our current life that I’d be too afraid to change anything,” she said, according to the translated version of her statement.

Two years ago, when Hamrick was spotted wearing a big diamond on that finger, she played it coy. At the time, while promoting her debut novel First Position, she said, “In my mind, it’s a promise ring. We’ll be immature and call it a promise ring.” Now, she’s finally shared the secret behind their long-lasting relationship: “We try to support each other, be there for each other, and make sure everyone is happy. That’s all that matters to me and all I strive for.”

According to PEOPLE, the Beast of Burden crooner was already a father of seven when he first met Hamrick in Japan during one of the Rolling Stones’ tours, which happened to coincide with a tour date for Hamrick’s American Ballet Theatre. The two crossed paths backstage at the concert, and sparks flew instantly. However, according to Hamrick, Jagger was already in a relationship at the time, and they didn’t even exchange numbers. When asked about their first meeting the local French outlet, she said, “Maybe a spark, but nothing incredible, like, ‘Come on, I’ll blow your mind, and we’ll travel the world.’”

The couple managed to keep things under wraps for a while, until June that year, when Jagger invited Hamrick to join him for the band’s stop in Zurich. That appearance kept dominating the headlines for weeks. In 2016, the couple welcomed their first child together, a son, Deveraux “Devi” Octavian Basil Jagger. Jagger was earlier married to Bianca Jagger, and his second wife was Jerry Hall, with whom he shares Karis, Jade, Elizabeth, James, Georgia May, Gabriel, and Lucas.
