6 ways to improve brain functioning | Health News

Like the rest of the body, the brain requires appropriate care and exercise. So, we asked experts for six ways to help improve brain functioning.Dr Narander Singhla, lead consultant in internal medicine at CK Birla Hospital®, Delhi, told us that improving brain functioning can be achieved through a combination of lifestyle changes, mental exercises, and healthy habits.
“Regular exercise is essential for brain health as it improves blood flow, boosts cognitive function, and promotes neuroplasticity. Engaging in at least 20-30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, such as walking, cycling, or swimming, multiple times a week can enhance brain performance,” said Dr Singhla.

Staying mentally active is equally essential—activities like reading, solving puzzles, or learning a new skill challenge the brain and help build cognitive reserve, reducing the risk of age-related cognitive decline.
This is what you can do to protect brain health.
Dr Pankaj Agarwal, head of the department of neurology, Gleneagles Hospital Parel Mumbai, shared the following:
Get a good night’s sleep: Everyone must get 7–8 hours daily to help their brain rest and reset. Don’t neglect your sleep routine. According to Dr Singhla, getting enough sleep is vital for memory consolidation and learning. Aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep each night and maintaining a consent sleep schedule can significantly improve brain function.Story continues below this ad
Stay physically active: Regular exercise, without fail, will increase blood flow to the brain and improve memory. It is better not to skip exercising.
Eat brain-boosting foods: A well-balanced diet is essential. Add fish, nuts, berries, leafy greens, and whole grains to your meals. Avoid junk, processed, oily, and canned foods. Dr Singhla said that consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, such as those in the Mediterranean diet, provides essential nutrients and antioxidants supporting brain health.

Keep your mind active: Solve puzzles, read books, learn something new, or play brain games. Try to learn a new skill like a new language, dance or photography. “Staying socially active and engaged helps support brain function and reduces the risk of cognitive decline. Maintaining strong social connections, joining clubs or groups, and participating in hobbies that bring joy and purpose can contribute to better mental health,” said Dr Singhla.
Stay socially connected: Talking to friends and family keeps your mind sharp and reduces stress. Open up about your feelings with your friends.Story continues below this ad
