Sacked from Indian team, Abhishek Nayar to return to KKR | Ipl News

A few days after he was removed as assant coach of the Indian team, Abhishek Nayar is all set to join Kolkata Knight Riders as one of the support staff. Nayar had earlier worked for KKR and was their main man behind the scenes, taking care of grooming players in the academy.
As previously reported this newspaper, the batting group’s continued failures in Test cricket at home and abroad had put the spotlight on Nayar’s role. It is understood that during the review meeting conducted soon after the Australia tour, Nayar’s role was questioned multiple voices in the team management, while feedback was sought from players too. This is also the first instance of the BCCI stepping in to terminate a contract of a support staff handpicked the head coach.

The Indian board had removed the support staff members Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach T Dilip, and the conditioning coach Soham Desai. The Indian team will also have a new masseur going ahead on the tour of England. The decisions were taken the BCCI bosses in their review of the debacle in the Border-Gavaskar series.
It is understood that Nayar’s tenure was up for renewal in June, but with the team set to tour England for a five-match Test series, the board had decided to ring the changes now before the squad is picked.

From the time the new coaching group took charge with the tour of Sri Lanka, Nayar has been seen as the link between the coach and the players. Apart from enjoying a good rapport with captain Rohit Sharma, in the past, the likes of Dinesh Karthik, Venkatesh Iyer have attributed Nayar for their success in the white-ball format. Even in the current set-up, Varun Chakaravarthy had credited Nayar for his comeback to the Indian team, while more recently KL Rahul attributed his upturn of form to the 41-year-old former Mumbaiand India allrounder.
However, soon after India lost the Test series at home against New Zealand, batting great Sunil Gavaskar had questioned Nayar’s role. “For batting…what is the role of Abhishek Nayar in the team? Is he a batting coach or an assant coach?” he had told Sports Tak.
