Sam Altman praises India’s AI adoption rate as Ghibli-style ChatGPT images go viral | Technology News
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hailed the acceleration of AI adoption in India and said that the country will outpace the world given “the explosion of creativity”.
“What’s happening with ai adoption in india right now is amazing to watch. we love to see the explosion of creativity–india is outpacing the world.” Altman wrote in a post on X on Wednesday, April 2.
His comments come amid the viral trend of ChatGPT-generated images in the style of Studio Ghibli that has gripped the internet, including among Indian users. Last week, the Microsoft-backed AI startup introduced a native image generation feature in ChatGPT powered its GPT-4o model.

Since then, social media timelines have been flooded with these Studio Ghibli-style AI-generated or modified images. While most of them are personal photos of users rendered in anime style, some users also prompted the AI chatbot to generate Ghibli-style images of horical photographs and iconic scenes from Bollywood movies.
Soon after his initial post, the OpenAI frontman also shared a Ghibli-style image of himself as an Indian cricket player.
During his February visit, Sam Altman had said that India was OpenAI’s second biggest market after the US.
“India is an incredibly important market for AI in general, for OpenAI in particular. It’s our second biggest market after the US. Users here have tripled in the last year. The innovation that’s happening, what people are building [in India], it’s really incredible. We’re excited to do much, much more here, and I think it’s (the Indian AI program) a great plan.” Altman had said.

Reacting to Altman’s post on Wednesday, Aakrit Vaish, an adviser to the government-led IndiaAI mission, suggested that ChatGPT paid subscribers in India could be close to one million given that daily active users (DAU) of the AI chatbot in India was 10 million and total ChatGPT subscribers came up to 20 million.
However, OpenAI is reportedly looking to cut the ChatGPT subscription price from $20 per month to just a few dollars for Indian users. The company is in talks with Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries’ Jio Platforms to dribute ChatGPT in India, according to a report The Information.
