Since returning to the White House in January, U.S. President Donald Trump has sought to expand the military’s role domestically, a move critics warn could dangerously extend executive authority and heighten tensions between soldiers and civilians.
Last month, Trump ordered National Guard troops into Washington, D.C., declaring they would “re-establish law, order, and public safety.” He also placed the capital drict’s Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control.
