Sensex down 50 points, Nifty above 12,000, Rupee opens lower

New Delhi: The Indian indices opened marginally lower on Thursday with Nifty around 12,200. At 09:17 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 38.79 points or 0.09% at 41519.78, and the Nifty down 15.10 points or 0.12% at 12206.60. While about 336 shares have advanced, 309 shares declined, and 30 shares remain unchanged.

M&M, Asian Paints, HDFC Bank and Dr Reddy’s, TCS, are among major gainers on the Indices, while the losers are Tata Steel, Tata Power, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank and Bharti Airtel. Tata Group stocks were trading in the green with Tata Steel, TCS, and Tata Motors up 0.35 per cent, 1.35 per cent, and 1.8 per cent, respectively.

The Rupee opened at 70.99 per dollar as against the previous close at 70.97 per dollar. Tata Group stocks may continue to remain under pressure on Thursday as National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Wednesday reinstated Cyrus Mistry as the executive chairman of the Tata group.

Lemon Tree Hotels share price rose 3.5 per cent in the early trade after the company signed a license agreement for a hotel located in Goa under the company’s brand ‘Lemon Tree Hotel’.

Benchmark indices were trading flat in the pre-opening session. At 09:01 hrs IST, the Sensex was up 3.21 points or 0.01% at 41561.78, and the Nifty was up 2.50 points or 0.02% at 12224.20.

Asian shares edged higher on Thursday amid growing confidence in the global outlook following improving economic indicators and a preliminary trade deal between the United States and China. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.08%. Australian shares were up 0.07%, while Japan’s Nikkei stock index slid 0.12%.

It is worth mentioning that the S&P BSE Sensex on Wednesday ended 206 points or 0.50 per cent higher at 41,559 while NSE’s Nifty50 index settled at 12,222, up 57 points or 0.47 per cent.
