Shardul Thakur, Ajinkya Rahane to play Irani Trophy for Mumbai | Cricket News

Mumbai’s all-rounder Shardul Thakur, Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane will feature in Irani Cup for Mumbai team which is scheduled to take on the Rest of India (ROI) side in Lucknow starting from October 1.
The Indian Express understands that Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will request the Indian cricket board to release Sarfaraz Khan, who is part of the Indian team team against Bangladesh. The second Test kicks off on September 27. It is learnt that if Khan doesn’t play the Test, the selection committee will release Mumbai’s middle-order batsman on the third day of the game. The MCA selection committee will be picking its squad on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Thakur will be playing his first domestic game after recovering from a foot surgery. He had undergone the treatment in London this June. His injury resurfaced during India’s tour of South Africa earlier this year.
Despite the injury, Shardul continued to feature in professional cricket – playing a prominent role in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy triumph. Scoring his maiden first class century, Shardul inspired Mumbai to a staggering 42nd Ranji Trophy title.

The senior national selection committee is likely to pick the Rest of India (ROI) squad for Irani Cup on Tuesday which is expected to comprise of fringe players and those who did well in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy.
