Shreyas Iyer to captain Mumbai, Prithvi Shaw included for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy | Cricket News
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) senior selection committee has appointed Shreyas Iyer as their skipper for the Mumbai T20 team for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The senior selection committee met on Sunday to pick a team for the domestic tournament which is scheduled to kick off on November 23.
Under Iyer’s captaincy, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the IPL title last season and the MCA selection committee felt Iyer is the best man for the job.
Iyer leading the side means Ajinkya Rahane, who is leading Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season will play under Iyer’s captaincy. It is learnt that the selection committee of MCA had intimated Rahane that they are looking for Iyer to captain the Mumbai team in short format.
The selection committee has also included Prithvi Shaw, who was dropped from the Ranji Trophy game and was asked to improve his fitness. MCA felt that Shaw has shown improvement and he is handy in white ball cricket.
“Iyer will lead the Mumbai T20 side for Syed Mushtaq Ali and Shaw too has been included. Rahane will be playing under Iyer’s captaincy as MCA feels Iyer is the right choice for this format,” a source informed.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Shivam Dube, Musheer Khan and Tushar Deshpande are yet to recover fully from their injuries and it was the main reason MCA didn’t pick them.
Mumbai will play against Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Nagaland, Services and Andhra in their league games.
