Shubman Gill looks to Virat Kohli for inspiration in New Zealand

shubman Gill had become a household name in early 2018 after his 372 runs helped India lift the Under-19 World Cup for the fourth time. A year later, Gill is back where it all started. In New Zealand with the senior Indian team, Shubman Gill is ready for the big stage.

Immediately after his sensational World Cup campaign, Gill played in the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders and scored 203 runs incuding a fine 57 not out. Gill made his mark in the Ranji Trophy too with a 328-ball 268 against Tamil Nadu.

Shubman Gill watched as his Under-19 captain from the World Cup Prithvi Shaw scored a hundred on Test debut. After an impressive performance against the visiting West Indies, Shaw was the first choice opener for the Test series in Australia before an injury ruled him out of the tour.

With the World Cup round the corner, Gill would have given up hope of an India call-up. But when Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul were banned for their sexist remarks on Koffee with Karan, a door opened up for Gill. He and Vijay Shankar were named replacements.

Shubman Gill had his first net session with the Indian team and he will look to learn plenty from Virat Kohli, who is the undisputed king of the cricket world. On Tuesday, he became the first man ever to win all three ICC awards in a single year.

“I am really looking forward to meeting him [Kohli], having a chat with him, and closely looking at the way he practices for games,” Gill told kkr.in.
