At least seven people were killed when a small plane crashed in central Mexico while trying to make an emergency landing, officials said on Monday.
The accident happened in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area about 5 km from Toluca airport and around 50 km west of Mexico City, according to the Associated Press (AP). The aircraft had taken off from Acapulco on Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández said the private jet was carrying eight passengers and two crew members. “So far, seven bodies have been recovered,” he said, adding that search and recovery efforts were continuing hours after the crash.
Hernández said the plane appeared to be attempting to land on a football field but struck the metal roof of a near business instead. The impact caused a large fire. “The incident is under investigation,” he said.
San Mateo Atenco mayor Ana Muñiz told Milenio Television that the fire led authorities to evacuate around 130 people from the surrounding area as a safety measure.Story continues below this ad
Emergency services responded to the scene, and officials said further details would be released once the investigation progresses.
