Smriti Mandhana breaks record for most international runs in a calendar year

India opener Smriti Mandhana recaptured a unique record on Sunday, after smashing 91 runs against the West Indies in the first ODI in Vadodra.
With the innings, Mandhana took her tally of runs in 2024, across all three formats, to 1,602 runs, breaking the all-time record for most international runs scored in a calendar year. She reached the milestone in 36 matches, with her highest score in 2024 being the 149 she scored against South Africa in the only Test in Chennai in June.
In India’s recently concluded T20I series win over West Indies, she had also set the record for most runs in a calendar year in women’s T20Is, scoring 763 runs in 2024. She also broke the record for most 50+ scores in women’s T20I cricket in the series decider on Thursday.
Mandhana overtook South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, who has ended her year with 1,593 runs. The southpaw has two more ODIs against the West Indies left to play this year. The 28-year-old had herself claimed the record in 2018 before losing it to Nat Sciver Brunt in 2022.
India finished the first innings on a good footing 314-9 batting first on Sunday. It was not only Mandhana’s exploits, but a team contribution to take the total past 300, with solid scores from Harmanpreet Kaur (34 off 23), Harleen Deol (44 off 50), Richa Ghosh (26 off 12) and Jemimah Rodrigues (31 off 19) Kaur (34 off 23), Harleen Deol (44 off 50), Richa Ghosh (26 off 12) and Jemimah Rodrigues (31 off 19).
