Spurred Global Chess League’s success, AICF plans Indian chess league soon

After the success of the Global Chess League, an Indian chess league could soon become a reality as well. The All India Chess Federation will be inviting tenders for the league in the near future, it was decided at the AICF Annual General Meeting in Kanpur on Sunday.
“The Indian league will certainly happen soon, we’re working actively on a new process which will be in place soon,” said Dr. Sanjay Kapoor, the president of AICF.
The federation also named the Indian team for the Asian Games in September-October. The Indian men’s team will cons of D Gukesh, Vidit Gujrathi, P Harikrishna, Arjun Erigaisi and R Praggnanandhaa while Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, R Vasihali, Vantika Aggarwal and B Savitha Shri will represent the women’s team. In the individual section, Vidit and Arjun will represent India while in the women’s rapid event Humpy and Harika will chase medals.
The federation also announced the formation of a ‘special management board’ which will look after “all important affairs of AICF”. The federation also said that under its new development program for states, each affiliate of the AICF will receive Rs seven lakh per annum in addition to 200 chess sets.
The AICF also said it was looking to bring on board a professional agency to look after its revenues and bring in more sponsorship.
