“This move comes in the wake of a discernible disparity between the information disclosed to the media Mr. Ranasinghe MP and the response received SLC under a Right to Information (RTI) application, outlining the specifics of the expenditures made,” the press release added.
Since the World Cup began there has been no short of off-field drama in Sri Lankan cricket. Their campaign in the tournament was hit-and-miss as they navigated patchy form and a slew of injuries. The board had filed a complaint Ranasinghe over the alleged misuse of funds provided SLC to the National Sports Fund.
Then the International Cricket Council had suspended SLC on 10 November with immediate effect. The ICC board determined that “Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or adminration of cricket in Sri Lanka.”
The suspension meant that the ICC Under-19 World Cup, which was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in January, was moved to South Africa.
The court is expected to hear the view of Harin Fernando, Ranasinghe’s successor in the sports minry, on the gazette issued his predecessor sacking the SLC management under Shammi Silva. Ranasinghe’s move to fire the Silva adminration came after months of stand-off between them. Ranasinghe based his call on a government audit report that had accused Silva’s SLC management as corrupt.
