Stadium roof leaks as Prannoy match stopped in Malaysia | Badminton News
In bizarre scenes at the Malaysia Open Super 1000, first-round matches on Court 2 and Court 3 were halted after splotches of water drops fell from the roof at the Kuala Lumpur venue of the year’s first big badminton event.
One of the matches to be affected involved HS Prannoy who saw water pooling up on his left front court near the net on Court 3. The Indian was leading Canadian Brian Yang 21-12, 6-3 in the second set at that stage.
Earlier there had been problems when Yang played on the farther side too, but courtside officials had mopped up the court. However, in the second set, Prannoy gestured to the chair umpire that the court had gotten risky as larger splotches formed on the court, typically where a right handed would play his backhand lunge. Coach Gurusaidutt also warned the player of the risk.
The referee arrived on the court soon after and both players left the court after 25 minutes. Two other organising members inspected the leak but play was still held up 30 minutes later.
Court 2 had more pressing problems as officials were seen lugging in multiple towels to mop up the court. Chinese Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian led home pairing Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing 11-10 on that affected court at the 12th minute.
Court 1 remained operational.
