“We stand ready in relation to monitoring the ceasefire and decommissioning Hamas capability and weaponry,” Starmer said, according to the Associated Press (AP). “That’s drawing on our experience in Northern Ireland and the IRA, which we dealt with in particular in relation to decommissioning.”
International cooperation to rebuild Gaza
Starmer made the remarks alongside Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who also played a key role in mediating the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
The British PM also expressed hope that international cooperation could ensure Gaza’s reconstruction and prevent a return to conflict.
At the same summit, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he hoped US President Donald Trump who brokered the Gaza truce could now use his influence to help end the war in Ukraine.
