Sunil Gavaskar says Rohit Sharma will himself step down if he fails to score at MCG and SCG | Cricket News
Sunil Gavaskar said if Rohit Sharma will fail to score runs in the next two Tests in Melbourne and Sydney, the Indian captain will step down himself, and will not wait for selectors to make that call.
“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” Sunil Gavaskar said on ABC Sport on Tuesday.
“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket.
“So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down.”

In the last 13 Test innings, Rohit Sharma is averaging 11.83, has managed only 152 runs with only one fifty to his name.
“It’s the line, I think the stump line has been troubling him a lot,” Cheteshwar Pujara said on ESPNcricinfo. “He is getting out lbw and bowled (six of his last ten dismissals) which is a bit of a concern for him.”
Meanwhile, Dinesh Karthik feels Rohit’s loss of form has a lot to do with his lack of confidence.
“I think it is time for him to show the other way around, to guts it out. Make sure that he is there, avoid shots that is going to be dangerous on that pitch and back his technique,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

“Rohit Sharma has played a decade and a half of international cricket (17 years), if you are telling that his technique is not water-tight, I will be very surprised.
“He has got areas that he is vulnerable in, but everybody has that, he needs to guts it out, fight it out.
“I am not sure if he believes in it right now, but that could be his confidence. But if he puts his mind to it, this question can be answered. Because what India needs, is a mentally tough Rohit Sharma.”
