Tamil Nadu class 12 results announced, slight dip in overall pass percentage

With an overall pass percentage of 91.1 per cent this year, the class 12 results in the State saw a slight drop when compared to 2017 where an overall pass percentage of 92.1 percent was recorded.

Ahead of the announcement of results for students at 9.30 a.m. on Wednesday, Minister for School Education K.A. Sengottaiyan announced the overall performance of the State at a press conference. “Girls have secured a pass percentage of 94.1 per cent and boys have recorded 87.7 per cent,” he said.

He further announced that of the 6,754 schools that had candidates take up the exam, as many as 1,907 schools had secured a 100 per cent pass percentage.

This is the first time in the last five years that the pass percentage has seen a dip. In 2017, the overall pass percentage, at 92.10 was the highest recorded in the last five years then.

Over 9.07 lakh school students and private candidates had taken up the class 12 board exams which had begun on March 1. The school education department, in a first, had announced the date of the exams as well as the results at the start of the academic year, in a move to keep students stress free.

As was done last year, the education department has not announced the names of students who are toppers or have secured State ranks. Schools have already been intimated through a circular that they should avoid publicising students as toppers and Mr. Sengottaiyan too said that schools will be contacted if found to be doing so. This move was taken in order to ensure that students did not feel pressurised.

Virudhunagar district once again emerged as the top with regards to the performance of the students and recorded a pass percentage of 97 per cent. Erode and Tiruppur were second on the list.
