Puthandu Tamil New Year 2025: Puthandu, also known as Puthurusham and Varusha Pirappu, marks the beginning of the new year in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai, and in 2025, it will be observed on Monday, April 14, with the Sankranti moment at 03:30 AM.
In Tamil Nadu, the new year begins on Sankranti, after sunrise and before sunset. If Sankranti falls after sunset, the new year begins the following day.
Notably, many other Indian communities celebrate their traditional new year around the same time – Bihu in Assam, Baishakhi in Punjab, and Pohela Boishakh in West Bengal.

Puthandu signifies fresh beginnings, hope and prosperity. The celebrations begin with waking up early in the morning to look at flowers, fruits, gold, silver and other items that radiate prosperity.
Devotees visit the temple and start the year praying for a successful and productive year ahead. Furthermore, making kolam rangolis in their courtyards to invite positive energy is also a common practice.
Other customs include the preparation of manga pachadi, a dish with six different flavours that represent the different emotions one experiences in life, and reading “Panchangam” which is usually done the oldest member of the family.
