Tanzid Hasan Tamim graduates with attack on Shardul Thakur’s bowling
It was graduation day for Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim. Part of the 2019-20 under-19 World Cup winning team, came up with a brief but fearless assault on India pacer Shardul Thakur here. His 51 gave Bangladesh a fine start on a batting beauty.
More than anything, it was his audacious intent starting with a hooked 6 to fine leg, funneling all of Bumrah’s pace into his swish on the final delivery of the 7th over. Bumrah had only given 7 runs off his 3 overs, but Tanzid issued the first threat of going after the bowlers.
But it was against the military medium Thakur that Tanzid really freed his arms, welcoming him in the 10th over with a calm defense off the first delivery. There was no indication of the violence to follow, but when Thakur went a tad shorter next ball, Tanzid pounced on it with his wrs clicking into shape for a heaved pick-up over square leg for a 6 as the Bangladesh opening partnership reached 50.
He would next step out of the crease and go elevated over midon for a 4 next ball, and he wasn’t done yet. Very next ball with Thakur slumping in pace and bowling fuller, Tanzid timed stunningly smacking it for a 6 over extra cover to mess with Thakur’s starting figures as he went for 16 in his first. The sweetest bludgeons though came as he inched close to 50, and he again went after Thakur with a lofted cover drive to reach 49.Most Read

His inexperience showed when a break after his half century saw him lose his concentration, and he went slogging across the line to a fastish flattish Kuldeep and ended plum in front, and the dizzy run ended at 51. Bangladesh finished their first powerplay with a better 6.3 rpo than previous games.
One of the things Bangladesh’s senior media manager Rabeed Imam had said about the induction of four of the U19 World winners into the senior Cup side was how they had inspired the senior team, in the confident manner of carrying themselves through that successful campaign. The management has maintained they came to India with the best available 15 in the ODI format and it was only about the junior crop bringing their A game in. And despite the top order coming under searing criticism and Tanzid tallying just 22 from three games, Bangladesh had persed with him as opener.
Coach Hathurusingha was asked about Tamim Iqbal’s omission again on match eve, and said, “Well, he’s not here.” It was the junior Tamim though, who was in Pune, who briefly creased Rohit Sharma’s forehead, and jangled Thakur’s bowling figures.
