Thamma box office collection day 1: Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna film earns Rs 24 cr, less than half of Stree 2’s opening | Bollywood News

Thamma box office collection worldwide day 1: Aditya Sarpotdar’s vampire romance, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, managed to secure the big Diwali release spot this year, thanks to the horic precedent set its predecessor, Amar Kaushik’s blockbuster horror comedy Stree 2 last year. However, if the opening day figure is anything to go , Thamma’s collection failed to match upto Stree 2.
It released on Tuesday, a day after Diwali, when a lot of offices and schools were shut. Thamma could earn only Rs 24 crore on its opening day. In comparison, it’s less than half of Stree 2, which amassed Rs 51.80 crore on its opening day on the occasion of Independence Day last year. Additionally, it also garnered another Rs 8.50 crore from paid previews alone.
After a long 11-week run, the total domestic box office collection of Stree 2 concluded at Rs 597.99 crore, as per Sacnilk, thus beating that of the Hindi dubbed version of Atlee’s action thriller Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, which amassed Rs 582.31 crore the previous year, to become the highest grossing Hindi film of all time domestically.

Thamma clocks horror universe’s second highest box office opening
However, despite mixed reviews, Thamma may cash in on the buzz around the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, that it’s a part of, to grow from strength to strength at the domestic box office. That happened in the case of Sarpotdar’s last directorial, Munjya, last year.
That film was headlined the CGI-created titular ghost character, and supported newcomers like Abhay Verma and Sharvari Wagh. It opened at Rs 4 crore in India, but picked up pace at the domestic box office, with its six-week run concluding at Rs 101.60 crore, thus entering the coveted Rs 100 crore club.
Munjya wasn’t the first film in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe to achieve that feat. Stree 2’s box office momentum was also influenced the success of its first part, which established the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe back in 2018. Marking the directorial debut of Amar Kaushik, and also starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor among others, it opened at Rs 6.82 crore and went on to earn Rs 167 crore at the domestic box office.

Kaushik followed that up with the creature comedy Bhediya, starring Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, earned only Rs 7.48 crore on its opening day and leading to a total domestic box office collection of Rs 68.99 crore, also getting impacted the Covid pandemic. Thus, as far as the opening day figure is concerned, Stree 2 ranks the highest, followed Thamma, Bhediya, Stree, and Munjya in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe.Story continues below this ad
